How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot: Tips from Kimberly Allan Photography

Newborn baby photo session in Bothwell, South Lanarkshire by Kimberly Allan Photography

Booking your newborn session is such an exciting step in welcoming your little one into the world. To help you feel calm and ready for the day, I’ve put together a few tips so you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare.

As a specialist newborn photographer based in Bothwell, South Lanarkshire, I create calm, baby-led sessions in my warm and welcoming home studio. Here's how to make the most of your experience:

1. Dress in Neutral, Comfortable Clothing

For parents and siblings who wish to be included in the shoot, I recommend wearing neutral tones like beige, cream, soft greys, and whites. These timeless colours help keep the focus on your baby and create a beautifully soft, natural look in your final images. Avoid busy patterns or logos if possible.

The studio will be kept at a very warm temperature to ensure your baby stays cosy and relaxed, so choose lightweight, breathable outfits for yourself to stay comfortable throughout the session.

2. What to Bring with You to your Newborn photoshoot

Here are a few essentials I recommend bringing to your session:

  • Extra milk (if your baby is bottle fed)

  • A dummy (if your baby uses one)

  • Plenty of nappies

  • Muslin cloths

  • A few outfit changes (for you and baby)

Dress your baby in a simple babygrow or an outfit that is easy to remove. This helps us gently undress them without waking or disturbing them, especially if they arrive asleep.

3. Expect a Calm and Unhurried Experience

Newborn sessions typically last between 1 to 3 hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and changes without any pressure. My studio is designed for comfort, and I provide light refreshments throughout your visit but feel free to bring along anything extra you or your baby may need.

This time is yours to relax and soak up the quiet magic of your baby’s early days.

4. Don’t Stress – I’ve Got You

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is: relax and enjoy it. I’m here to guide you through the entire experience. With years of experience as both a professional newborn photographer and a parent myself, I’ve seen it all. There’s no need to worry about fussiness, accidents, or unpredictable moments, it’s all part of the journey.

This session is a chance for you to sit back, take a breath, and watch your baby be gently photographed in those fleeting early days.

I can’t wait to welcome you into the studio and capture memories you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
