Capturing the glow, emotion, and anticipation of your pregnancy journey is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. An outdoor maternity photoshoot is a stunning way to document this special time surrounded by nature, with beautiful light and space to breathe. Here’s how to prepare for your outdoor session with Kimberly Allan Photography.

1. Why Choose an Outdoor Maternity Session?
An outdoor maternity photoshoot offers the perfect blend of natural beauty and personal connection. Whether we’re photographing in the peaceful woodlands of Bothwell, a South Lanarkshire country park, or along the scenic River Clyde, the open setting allows us to capture relaxed, organic moments filled with light, movement, and emotion.
It’s ideal for clients who want a timeless, natural look that reflects this incredible chapter of motherhood.
2. When is the Best Time for a Maternity Photoshoot?
The best time to schedule your maternity session is between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your bump is beautifully shaped, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around easily. We’ll choose a time of day that gives us the softest, most flattering light, usually early morning or golden hour (just before sunset).
3. What to Wear to Your Outdoor Maternity Shoot
Choose flowing dresses or fitted outfits in neutral, earthy tones — such as soft beige, muted pink, olive green, or warm whites. These colours blend seamlessly with the outdoor environment and create a soft, dreamy look. Bring along a light shawl or cardigan in case it gets breezy. Partners and children are always welcome, and I recommend coordinating outfits in similar tones for a cohesive family feel.
4. Making You Feel Comfortable
I understand that stepping in front of the camera might feel daunting, especially during pregnancy. But my sessions are calm, supportive, and completely guided. I’ll direct you with gentle, natural prompts to bring out your connection, love, and personality.
No awkward posing, just authentic, warm moments.
5. Locations I Love Around South Lanarkshire
We’re spoiled for choice in South Lanarkshire. Some of my favourite outdoor maternity shoot locations include:
Bothwell Castle grounds – romantic ruins and woodland trails
Chatelherault Country Park – open fields and tree-lined paths
Local hidden gems – private spots I’ve scouted for soft light and serenity
We’ll choose a location that feels right for your vision.
6. Final Thoughts & How to Book
Maternity photography is about celebrating you. Your strength, your softness, and your journey into motherhood. Outdoor sessions offer the perfect canvas for that story. I’d love to help you tell it. If you would like to book, drop me an email! And if the idea of an outdoor shoot isn’t for you, whether due to personal preference or the unpredictable Scottish weather. I also offer cosy and elegant studio maternity sessions in my Bothwell-based home studio.
